GW2 Preview: Captaincy Calls, Fixture Targets and the Players in Form

Gameweek 1 is in the books — a 50-point average, a 131-point top score, and plenty of lessons. Now GW2 arrives fast: the deadline is Friday evening (check the countdown on our dashboard for your local time). Here's what actually matters before you press save.
What GW1 taught us
The biggest early theme: the busy, unfashionable picks delivered. Brighton's De Cuyper announced himself with a huge haul, Brentford's M.Sangaré and Kayode both returned strongly, and Manchester City's Cherki leads the early form charts. Meanwhile some big-name captains — Haaland included — gave their backers a quiet afternoon. One week is noise, not signal, so don't rip your team apart. But the market is already moving: several of those GW1 stars have already risen in price, and more rises are queued. The fixtures that matter
Three games stand out for FPL purposes:
- Man United v Ipswich — the pick of the round for attacking returns. Bruno Fernandes at home against a promoted side is the kind of fixture premium midfielders are bought for.
- Chelsea v Brighton — Chelsea at home rate as strong favourites, putting João Pedro and Palmer firmly in play; but Brighton's own attackers travel better than their price suggests, so this could produce points at both ends.
- Villa v Arsenal — hard fixture for both sides (difficulty 4 each way). If you're choosing a captain from either team, temper expectations.
Also kind: Spurs at home to Newcastle, Sunderland hosting Fulham, and Coventry v Hull — rated easy for both sides, which usually means goals. The full colour-coded grid is on the fixtures page.
Captaincy corner
The armband debate this week is genuinely close:
- João Pedro (CHE, home v BHA) — the data pick. In form after a GW1 double-digit return, at home, in the round's second-easiest fixture for the hosts. Our optimizer gives him the armband.
- Haaland (MCI, away at CRY) — the ceiling pick. He blanked in GW1, which drags his form score down, but Palace away is far from frightening and nobody's ceiling is higher. Owned by nearly 70% of managers, he's also the safe crowd option: captaining him can't lose you ground against the field.
- Bruno Fernandes (MUN, home v IPS) — the fixture pick. Penalties, set-pieces and the round's most favourable matchup.

Differentials worth a look
All under 8% owned, all delivered in GW1: Hinshelwood (BHA, ~2%) faces a tougher trip to Chelsea but is in outstanding form; Mendy and Ajayi give Hull double defensive coverage in a friendly fixture at Coventry; and Stach (LEE, ~3%) hosts Brentford after a goal-and-DefCon masterclass. Before the deadline checklist
- Check your squad for GW1 knocks on your team page — injury flags are marked in red.
- Beat tonight's price changes if your transfer target is on the rise list.
- Don't take a −4 hit to chase one week of form — a saved transfer is worth more than a hunch.
- Set your captain last, after the press conferences, not first.
