GW4 Preview: Derby Day, European Rotation and an Early Deadline
By Geomi George · Published 7 September 2026
Gameweek 3 was a reality check — a 36-point average, less than half of GW2's party, with clean sheets and defenders carrying the week while big attackers blanked. GW4 brings two complications at once: a Manchester derby, and the arrival of European midweek football for the continental clubs. Oh, and an early Saturday deadline — check the countdown on our dashboard now so it doesn't catch you out.
What GW3 told us
The top scorers list says it all: Palace's Mitchell (15), Leeds' Bogle (14) and Brighton's Vuskovic (12) — a week owned by defenders almost nobody has. Our captain call, Haaland, did his job with 9 points (18 with the armband) against a 36 average, while Bruno Fernandes — the round's most popular alternative — blanked with 2. The bigger story is Liverpool quietly clicking into gear: Isak (13) and Gakpo (11) both hauled, and that matters directly for this week's armband.
The fixtures that matter
- Man United v Man City — the derby, rated hard for both sides. Bruno (form 9.0) and Haaland owners keep them, obviously, but this is a week to temper expectations and think twice before captaining anyone in it.
- Liverpool v Fulham — the round's standout attacking fixture. With Isak and Gakpo both flying, this is where the smart armbands point.
- Chelsea v Hull — two stories in one fixture. For Hull's beloved budget defence (Ajayi, Mendy, Egan, keeper Tzolakis) it's the round's worst away trip — bench where you can, but don't panic-sell over one hard week. For Chelsea it's a difficulty-2 home game, which puts João Pedro and Palmer right back in the conversation after their quiet afternoon at Arsenal.
- Kind home fixtures for Palace (v Ipswich), Coventry (v Brighton) and Leeds (v Newcastle) round out the targets — the full grid is on the fixtures page.
Europe arrives — the rotation era begins
From this week, the clubs involved in continental competition start playing every three or four days, and that changes squad-building maths for the rest of the autumn. Expect the big-squad managers to rotate full-backs, wingers and occasionally a striker around European nights. Three practical rules: favour nailed players at clubs without midweek football when choices are close; wait for the Friday press conferences before locking in anyone from a European club; and treat surprise benchings in this window as rotation, not a dropped player — don't rage-sell someone who's rested once. With this week's deadline arriving at Saturday lunchtime, the window between team news and lock-in is tighter than usual, so do your thinking early.
Captaincy corner
- Gakpo (LIV, home v FUL) — our optimizer's pick: in form, nailed minutes, and the round's best fixture. The armband case writes itself.
- Isak (LIV, home v FUL) — same fixture, 13 points last week, and arguably the higher ceiling. Splitting Liverpool's attack is the only hard part of this decision.
- João Pedro or Palmer (CHE, home v HUL) — the fixture pick. The game's most-owned player (João Pedro, 72%) at home in a difficulty-2 match is a captain option every week, and Palmer offers the same matchup with more of the ball. The counterpoints: both blanked at Arsenal last week, and Hull's defence has quietly been better than its price tag — which is exactly why our model edged towards Anfield instead. Close call, not a snub.
- Haaland (MCI, away derby) — the ceiling is always there, but a derby at Old Trafford is the hardest fixture he'll captain all season. Safe by ownership, not by matchup.

Differentials worth a look
Scott (BOU, 3.5% owned, form 8.0) is the pick of the bunch — a genuine starter in form, hosting Brentford, and currently queued for a price rise on our predictor, so movers get a discount. Bogle (LEE, 1.1%) backs up his 14-point haul with a friendly home game against Newcastle, and Tavernier (BOU, 2.9%) offers a second route into Bournemouth's attack. Small samples, as ever — the differentials guide covers how much weight to put on three good weeks.
Before the deadline checklist
- The deadline is Saturday lunchtime — earlier than you're used to. Set a reminder now.
- Check the price predictor tonight — Scott and Barnes are among those queued to rise.
- European-club players: wait for Friday's press conferences before finalising.
- After a 36-point average, everyone's team looks bad — that's not a reason for a −4. Hold steady.
Good luck for GW4 — the full optimized squad is on the Best XI page, and the derby will be live in our Match Centre.
