GW8 Preview: Friday Deadline, Chelsea v Spurs and the Closest Captain Call of the Season
By Geomi George · Published 23 October 2026
The Gameweek 8 deadline is tonight, Friday, at 18:30 UK time, because Ipswich v Forest opens the round at 20:00. It is a kind weekend for Chelsea and a hard one for Brighton, the captain call is as close as it has been all season, and the injury list has grown by two of the most-owned midfielders in the game. Check the countdown on the dashboard, then read on.
What GW7 left behind
The GW7 review has the detail and an honest score on last week's preview: the captain call was right, most of the differentials were not. This week we are naming fewer of them and backing each with more. The market has spent the week selling injured players: Semenyo (knee) and Szoboszlai (hamstring), both out with no return date, have each been moved on by around 400,000 managers, with Bruno Fernandes and a 50%-flagged Saka not far behind. The buying has gone to Tavernier, Cherki, Groß, De Cuyper, Rogers, Mbeumo, Palmer and Calvert-Lewin, every one of whom rose in price.
The fixtures that matter
- Chelsea v Spurs (Sat 5:30pm) — the softest home rating of the round. Chelsea have scored 17, Spurs have scored 6 and conceded 10. João Pedro, Palmer, Rogers and the in-form Neto are all in play; Chelsea's own clean sheet last week was their first, so the defence is still a punt.
- Villa v Man City (Sat 12:30) — Haaland's eight goals meet a Villa defence that has conceded 11. It is rated hard for City on paper, but City have scored 19 and Haaland has eight goals in seven games.
- Liverpool v Brighton (Sun 3pm) — the one that decides most mini-leagues. Brighton have scored 23, the most in the league, and kept five clean sheets; Liverpool have conceded 8 but have the better recent results. The model benches De Cuyper and Vuskovic for the trip. We would not: a defender on 59 points with five clean sheets does not go to the bench for one difficulty label. Groß is a hold, not a captain.
- Man United v Bournemouth (Sun 3pm) — Mbeumo (form 8.0, among the highest expected goal involvements of any midfielder) faces a defence that has conceded 13. Bruno owners who held one more week: this is the fixture, and if he blanks against Bournemouth at home, sell.
- Coventry v Fulham, Hull v Brentford and Ipswich v Forest (Fri) — the three other difficulty-2 fixtures. Fulham at Coventry is the most credible: Iwobi scored last week and Coventry have conceded 14. Ipswich have no clean sheet in seven, but Forest have scored five goals all season, so treat the Friday game as a Coventry-style trap.
- Arsenal v Everton (Sat 3pm) — Everton on the round's hardest away rating against a defence with four clean sheets. Raya, Calafiori and Konsa are the clean-sheet plays; Saka is a 50% doubt and should not be started blind.
The full grid, with the runs out to GW11, is on the fixtures page.
Captaincy corner
Our model has Haaland at 8.4 projected points and João Pedro at 7.7. That is the closest the top two have been all season, and this time the ownership rule does not separate them: 77% own Haaland, 73% own João Pedro. So the call comes down to the fixtures. Haaland goes to a Villa side that has conceded 11 and kept two clean sheets; João Pedro hosts a Spurs side that has conceded 10 and kept two. Form favours Haaland (9.5 against 7.0, eight goals to five), the venue favours João Pedro.
- Haaland (MCI, away at AVL) — our call. Eight goals in seven, the highest expected goal involvement in the game by a distance, and a form figure of 9.5. The early kick-off means you know your score by lunchtime.
- João Pedro (CHE, home v TOT) — the case is the fixture, and it is a good one. If you want the home captain, there is nothing wrong with it; the model has them within a point.
- Mbeumo (MUN, home v BOU) — the third option at 5.9 projected, on 8.0 form and against the weaker defence. A differential armband only for anyone who owns neither of the first two.
- Groß and Cherki — not this week. Groß goes to Anfield; Cherki did not get off the bench last week and faces a hard away game.
The team analyzer ranks the captain options in your own squad by projected points.
Three differentials, not five
Neto (CHE, £6.5m, 2.9% owned) scored twice at Everton for 15, has 34 points, is in our Best XI for Chelsea's home game with Spurs, and is queued for a price rise tonight. Evanilson (BOU, £6.1m, 4.9%) has 37 points on 9.5 form and an expected goal involvement above three and a half; United have conceded 10 without a clean sheet. Iwobi (FUL, £5.4m, 1.2%) is on set pieces, has an expected goal involvement of three, goes to a Coventry side that has conceded 14, and is also set to rise. Each of the three starts, each has underlying numbers behind the form, and each has the fixture. The differentials guide explains why that combination matters more than a hot week.
Before the deadline checklist
- 18:30 UK, tonight. Ipswich v Forest is the Friday opener. If you own anyone in that game, the lineups land about an hour before the deadline.
- Sell the injured, not the flagged. Semenyo and Szoboszlai are out with no date. Saka (50%), O'Reilly (75%) and Brobbey (75%) are doubts; bench them rather than take a hit on a flag.
- Chelsea keeper owners: Martinez has a head injury with no return date and is set to fall in price.
- Prices tonight: Neto, Iwobi, Foden, Henderson and Lewis-Potter are queued to rise; Semenyo, Tzolis, Martinez and James to fall. The predictor updates through the evening.
- One week ahead: GW9 is Liverpool v Arsenal, City v Brighton and Chelsea v United — a hard round for the big three attacks — while Hull host Ipswich, Villa host Fulham and Spurs host Palace on difficulty-2 ratings. Do not make a transfer this week that you would regret next.
The full optimized squad — 3-4-3, Haaland captain, João Pedro vice, Neto and Palmer both in — is on the Best XI page, and tonight's opener will be live in the Match Centre. Good luck for GW8.
